What I Learned From Stuart Scott
I met the legendary Stuart Scott of SportsCenter only once. It was a couple of years ago, he was a lot thinner than how I remembered him on TV. We were in an MMA gym. NFL linemen were there training and there was Stuart Scott training alongside them. He was quiet and polite. No "booyeahs!" Not the energy from him I was used to but still diligent.
I had no idea then that he was already battling cancer. He was just another mat brother... just another training partner. That memory of him now holds a completely different meaning. We had more techniques and power, but he had more strength of character and resilience. That's true martial arts.
To quote Stuart Scott:
"When you die, it does not mean that you lose to cancer. You beat cancer by how you live, why you live, and in the manner in which you live."
You affect a lot of people by just being you. You don't have to try to be inspiring or have ready on hand pearls of wisdom. If you carry yourself the way you want to carry yourself always, it'll affect people. Even if it's just for one brief moment. Even if it takes a while to sink in.
RIP.
